Laboratory Services

Lab technicians mostly analyze urine, tissue and blood samples to determine the presence of infection, bacteria or other abnormalities. These results will then be made available to the physician who ordered testing on the patient’s behalf.

Some laboratory screenings are available within thirty minutes of testing, but often samples take up to two days to process.

Southwestern Medical Center is committed to providing the best laboratory services possible which is why we are surveyed by the Joint Commission.

The Department of Laboratory, Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

DLMP is intended to operate as a reference laboratory for all SWMC patients, both inpatient and outpatient and provide a 24-hour service for selected diagnostic tests. In addition, it caters for non-common tests and provides liaison with an external laboratory, which is the Lab Corp for tests not available within our scope of service.

STANDARDS OF PRACTICE

Good Laboratory Practice Standards (GLPS) is a compliance monitoring program that ensures the quality and integrity of test data submitted to the Joint Commission accreditation agency, and the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB). Proficiency testing is to insure our compliance with the Joint Commission accreditation. Data obtained through laboratory inspections and data audits is used by the agencies to regulate our laboratory quality of patient’s services.
