iKidney stones are painful and sometimes difficult to pass naturally. If a kidney stone has grown too large or taken too long to pass, a urologist at Southwestern Medical Center may perform a lithotripsy procedure to aid in the removal of the stone.
Lithotripsy uses high-pressure shock waves to break-up kidney stones. The stones are then small enough to make passing through the bladder possible. During the procedure, patients will be monitored through x-ray or ultrasound to ensure the stone’s location.
Patients who have suffered from kidney stones previously are at a higher risk of developing them. It is important to maintain regular check-ups with your physician or urologist as a preventative measure.
Other measures to reduce the risk of kidney stones include:
