(Lawton, OK) – Southwestern Medical Center will be giving moms who have a baby born at the hospital a Baby Box, in an effort to reduce infant mortality rates. The goal of the program is to improve infant health care outcomes by providing families the critical education and vital resources needed to ensure a safe start to babies’ lives, free of charge.
In a recent study conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics, it was discovered, in the United States alone, approximately 3,500 infants die annually from sleep-related deaths, including sudden unexpected infant death (SUID), ill-defined deaths, and accidental suffocation and strangulation. In the 1990s, infant deaths started to decrease, after the launch of a national safe sleep campaign. However, in recent years, those numbers have not declined.
“At the Birthing Center at Southwestern Medical Center, we are proud to offer the free Baby Box University program to all families in Southwest Oklahoma, regardless if they are delivering here at Southwestern or at another facility,” stated Emily Minthorn, RN, Clinical Supervisor SWMC Newborn Nursery. “This program is based on the age-old borrowed approach that originated in Finland 80 years ago, where they are achieving one of the world’s lowest infant mortality rates.”
As a Baby Box Company Distributor, SWMC is able to provide parents a free Baby Box, as well as teach critical topics to include safe sleep practices to reduce the risks of SIDS and breastfeeding education. To take advantage of this free program, parents are required to complete three simple steps: 1) register online at BabyBoxUniversity.com, 2) select the syllabus “U.S. – Babies Need Boxes” and then take a short quiz to receive a certificate of completion, 3) bring the certificate of completion to our distribution center, located in the SWMC Newborn Nursery to receive their free Baby Box. Anyone who does not have access to a computer can complete the registration and certification process at SWMC, regardless if they are delivering at SWMC or at another facility.
The Baby Boxes are made from durable cardboard, and combined with vital education through Baby Box University, are aimed at reducing infant mortality and improving maternal and child health outcomes. The boxes may be used as a baby’s bed for up to the first six months of life. Each Box doubles as a safe sleeping space and comes with a firm mattress, waterproof cover, and a fitted sheet. All Boxes include a membership to Baby Box University, an online education program about pregnancy and parenting developed by the Baby Box Company.
