Mental Health Matters
May 1, 2025

Access to healthcare is a fundamental human right, something agreed upon internationally in the middle of the 20th century. Mental health was part of the package, and Mental Health Awareness Month was created in 1949, shortly after the declaration of health as a human right.
What this means is that “good” mental health is essential to all of us and vital to our communities, economies, and broader societies. It is our right to be able to access care that promotes mental wellness.
Each May, Mental Health Awareness Month raises awareness about mental health, promotes mental well-being, and reduces the stigma surrounding mental health conditions. The month serves as a reminder that mental health is a vital aspect of overall health and well-being, and that it's okay to seek help and support when needed.
At Southwestern Medical, we offer mental and behavioral health services designed to give you the treatment you need and deserve. We start by assessing each patient, including psychological and medical history, and then develop a care plan to be carried out by the experienced therapists who lead our mental/behavioral health teams.
Issues explored during the assessment process can include any of a number of conditions, including:
- Alcohol and other drug dependency
- Anxiety or other mood disorders
- Behavioral problems
- Cognitive impairments
- Depression
- Eating disorders
- Family or work-related problems
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Phobias
- Post-traumatic stress
- Sexual, physical, or emotional abuse

Mental health is just as important as physical health. This awareness month advises us to treat it that way. If you need help, please know that it is only a click or phone call away.
